She carefully rearranged the braids on her head at the scene of the hospital flashed through her mind. Was the doctor looking at her so intently because she lacked make up? Or may be her braids looked old?
How had I let my self go? May be a dabb or two of some make up could fix this?
Behind her, Mamma Jo was frantically searching in her bag. Charity was oblivious to her presence. Today was their last day at the hospital together. At least she could finally go back home and live her life.
"Could you please put the eye drops in my eyes?" Mamma Jo asked as she emptied another side pocket.
"Let me finish what I am doing," Charity responded impatiently. Putting down the mirror, she quickly picked up her shoes that needed shining and marched out the room. Back home her bed room had a huge mirror, here she had to borrow one just to look her face. Obviously, she looked like some backward young lady to the people around here.
Charity had volunteered to help Mamma Jo as a favour to her employer. The old lady had poor eye sight and needed help to get to the hospital. Guiding Mamma Jo seemed both easy and challenging. There were times when she seemed to see just alright and other times when Charity had to guide her every step. When Charity would ask her to wait by the bench as she went to retrieve her file at the hospital reception, it always surprised her to find Mamma Jo right behind her. However, it always amazed her that the moment Mamma Jo's turn to see the doctor came, she was suddenly dependent. Doubtless, her sight was poor and Charity did not know to what extent.
Half an hour after administering the eye drops, they were on their way to the bus station. Feeling uncomfortable to hold her hand as usual Charity held Mamma Jo by the wrist. Mamma Jo wrestled free of the grasp and held on to Charity's hand much to her dismay. Mamma Jo chatted eagerly, asking questions in recognition of the routes that Charity had led her on the past few days. Charity assented half heartedly as she counted time. She looked down occasionally in order to help Mamma Jo avoid a rock or a depression in the dusty foot path. Her thoughts on Mamma Jo's grasp of her hand.
Why did she want to hold her hand that way? Did it make her feel accepted or loved? It wasn't the first time. Charity had tried to indulge her twice and hold her hand as she led her, but she felt strange. Thinking back about her reflection in the mirror earlier in the morning, Charity questioned herself about who Mama Jo was seeing in her. Was she reflecting Jesus in her impatience and her lack of unseemly uncaring way of holding her hand. Was the look that she didn't like a similar reflection of the look that Jesus didn't like about her attitude?
