Jesus rose, wrapped a towel around his waist, and filled a basin with water, knelt down and began washing Peter’s feet. Feet washing was done by the lowliest of people and Peter pulled his feet back and denied Jesus, his Rabbi, this duty exclaiming, “No! You shall never wash my feet!” John 13:8a NIV But Jesus replied, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” John 13:8b NIV
The murmur of conversation ceased at one end of the table as did the laughter at the other. Jesus continued washing all twelve disciple’s feet. When he was finished, he gave them this message, a clue actually, to what was about to happen. Jesus said, “I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill scripture; he who shared my bread has lifted up his heel against me. I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am he.” John 13:18-19 NIV After he said this, he was noticeably troubled in spirit and continued, “Very truly I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me.” John 13:21 NIV
John, the disciple Jesus loved, asked him who he was talking about and Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” John 13:26 NIV
Then Jesus handed me the bread.
“Dear Jesus, I have betrayed you in thought, word, and deed. I ask for your forgiveness. ‘Teach me, O Lord, the way of your decrees; that I may follow it to the end. Give me understanding, so I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart. Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight. Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.’ Psalm 119:33-37 NIV Amen.”
