My sisters and I have invited a very special guest to dinner tonight. A man, much more now than a mere friend, who has literally given me new life. This is my story.

A short while ago I became very sick. I developed a severe fever and had to take to my bed. My sisters called the doctor. He wiped my brow and gave me a potion. “Take this, my friend. You’ll be right as rain in a couple of days”. Over the next few days my condition worsened however. My body started aching all over and I kept coughing. The doctor was summoned again. This time he just stood there, scratching his head, looking helpless. “There’s nothing else I can give you, my friend. Just keep warm, drink plenty of water and get lots of rest”. I followed his advice, but things continued to go downhill. I was later told that my speech became incoherent and that I kept drifting in and out of consciousness….

The next thing that I can recall is waking up in a dark and dingy cave, with my hands and feet tied together and with something like a gag over my face. I felt completely disorientated. Had I been kidnapped? Then somebody was calling my name asking me to come out of the cave. I started crawling towards the voice, then managed to stagger to my feet and hop, very slowly, through the entrance. I still could not see properly, because of the covering over my face, but I could hear gasps of astonishment and shouts of joy …..

Now, several days later, I know that my life, which was once so quiet and orderly, has changed completely. My friend and I are treated like celebrities wherever we go. We have both received death threats. People stop me on the street, stare at me, touch me, ask me how I feel. One of our other guests is talking of writing a book about my experience …….

Anyway, back to our dinner party. My sister Mary is getting grief about something she has bought for our guest. Something about a waste of money and not helping the poor. I had better go and help Martha sort it out.
