Mary’s body radiated as if someone had thrown her a hot blanket. Her face felt red and flaming. She could hear herself breathing like a clock echoing inside her head. Her palms were sweaty. Her chest was tight. Her brain struggling to form coherent thought.
She made eye contact with the speaker, knowing instantly that the next words out of her mouth would change her family forever. She tried to smile but realised that she was gulping air. She must look ridiculous but she was terrified. This decision was too big.
Mary smoothed down her skirt trying to dry her hands which conveniently gave her the chance to look down to take a deep breath. She opened her mouth and nothing came out.
She knew he was waiting. She knew that she needed to say something. She knew it all came down to her but she was entirely stunned.
“Mary?”
The word thundered into her brain. She swallowed, summoning a gasp of courage, desperately hoping that the words that were coming were the right ones.
“Yes Simon. I love you. I’ll marry you. We’ll all marry you!”
With energy gone she crumpled against his chest as he drew her into his empowering embrace.
“I’ve got you. I didn’t mean to frighten you. I just want us to be a family.
Mary nodded.
“I’m so sorry that James isn’t still here with you. He would never have left you and the girls alone if he were alive. I love you.”
“Yes. I know. I love you.”
She might have stayed there a while longer, getting used to the his touch but lifted her head to see her daughters pulling away from their Grandmother racing each other to get to her first.
“We knew! We kept a big surprise Mummy,” Sammy said.
“I knowed too Mummy,” Taylor added.
Mary knelt down and gathered the girls close. “You kept a wonderful surprise. I’m so proud of you both.” She was still terrified but felt her soul beginning to smile.
Simon reached for the girls and sat one on each hip while they reached for Mary engulfing her in a family hug.
“I love you all” Simon said.
Mary knew that James would have approved.
