It has been said that God’s love and grace are best understood when you understand how a credit card works. With a credit card, you can pay the amount due and satisfy the card company, but never satisfy the full debt. When we chose Christ, His blood and His love pay off the credit card daily, in Christ, there is no balance owed; He pays it all. There is no risk of identity theft; He looks at the hearts of man. With Christ, there are no missed payments; He paid it all. Does this mean we can max out our credit cards knowing that He will pay our debt? No. but there is some things that we are responsible for.

We are sometimes encouraged to use debt to do things such as shop for Christmas or purchase concert tickets our best friends. This is not how God wants us to live. God wants you to know that He has you covered. The difficult part is in knowing that you have a credit card, knowing your debt is covered, but still being judicious in how you use your credit card, if you use it at all.

What if I use the card? If you use the card, it only proves that you need God as much as I do. The Apostle Paul stated that no matter how innocent his intentions are, that evil is still in the mix. Evil is trying to get you to overuse the credit card. Evil is trying to get you to purchaser things that you don’t need. Evil is trying to show you and tell you that there is happiness in shopping. Buying stuff is fun! There is no greater feeling than the beeping sound of a cash register tallying up the total cost of your “many” purchases. Evil will tell you that God gave you that card for a reason. You are called to use it, so use it! The important thing is not only recognizing that you overspent, but asking for forgiveness and doing your best not to do it again.

Does it matter how much you over spend by? No, it doesn’t. Sin is sin, and the Bible clearly states that it is man, not God, who puts value on sin. You can steal a gold necklace from a jewelry store and a pack of gum from the corner store and in God’s eyes they are exactly the same. If you have struggles dealing with certain things then perhaps it’s best for you to stay away from that store until you are strong enough to handle it. There are several types of stores, but only one type of sin.

Here’s the best part; when you lay down in the evening, the thought and weight of mistakes still fresh on your heart and your mind, call the store. Inquire about your balance owing. Then, before you go to sleep, ask for forgiveness. In the morning, call the automated system and listen to hear your outstanding balance.

Lastly, offer praises to God for giving you a fresh start and a new beginning. Offer up thanksgiving for where you could be, and where you are. Enjoy your new start and be grateful for the new day that you are receiving. And if you are really feeling it, offer the same credit card deal to your brother, sister, or friend.
