Topic: Trees (12/05/05)
“Unnnhh!” She winced as the pain shot through her lower back. He was distraught; it seemed that life punished them with this cruel turn of events. Nine months ago, this grove served as a fortress for their secret tryst. Now, they were incarcerated in this hardwood prison, away from the help they so desperately needed. These trees would now become both bedroom and delivery room for this unmarried pair.

As the pain subsided, she closed her eyes and immediately returned to those earlier days of presumed innocence. She saw his handsome smile, that boyish charm that completely captivated her. In his eyes, she was the epitome of beauty. The magnetism was instant; they were polar opposites that perfectly complemented each other. They were young and excited, long on imagination but short on responsibility.

In their eyes, the possibilities were endless. They invested hours together, first talking, then holding hands. This grove became their secret place, away from it all. Imaginations grew as large as redwoods, hormones raged like a strong wind thrashing the treetops, and instantly the place became the Garden of Eden. They felt secure in letting nature take its course beneath the arbor trestle. This was pollination season for the forest. Pollen is carried to the female flower, and after contact, produces sperm, which unites with the eggs to produce seeds that will bring forth fruit after its own kind. Everything seemed so right, so orchestrated.

Eight weeks later, they realized that while these broadleaf pillars could protect them from the external elements, they were still exposed to the inevitable consequences of their carnal impulses. The seed had been scattered.

“Aaaghh!” Another pain forced her onto the ground, writhing in anguish. He hurriedly gathered leaves and small twigs for a makeshift bed for this young woman and their expected arrival. It was time now. Two thoughts raced through his mind as she lay down, waiting for the emergence of this new human being: “The Lord is my shepherd,” and “For unto us a child is born.” Meanwhile, another tree was being added to the forest.

Perhaps it is me, but I can't see the forest for the trees. It is well written, but I am confused as to whether this is about a human baby, or that humans are like part of the forest? I liked it, just couldn't get my dense brain to see clearly what was happening. When I have time I will come back to this one - as it is intriguing, well written and somehow beautiful.

For most of the piece, I thought you were writing about Adam and Eve. That seems not to be the case. Who are these people?

Your way with words is undeniable--this is just a little bit cryptic.

I have read that a Sylvan is a forest diety or forrest spirit. Is this what you are referring to? I can't make a lot of sense from this. Sorry--interesting to read, but left me confused.
