Fall was slow in coming this year. Yet in the wind you could feel the center was cool even though the breeze was still wrapped in warmth. The college campus was decked with pumpkins, hay stacks, and even coffeehouses were offering their pumpkin spiced coffee and apple cider teas. Football stadiums were packed on the weekends and families came to see their students. Fall was in the air.
“All this is going to change now; my life has been radically altered. How could I have let this happen? I had everything going for me and now, it’s all gone. This shouldn’t have happened and I never thought just one time could cost me everything.” The leaves were blowing gently to the ground and her tears were streaming down her face. “I don’t have any answers God and I can’t talk to anyone yet. God I’m sorry but I can’t fix this, there are no easy answers and I don’t like any of the solutions. What now?”
She walked into her dorm, wiped her eyes and cheeks and looked straight ahead. Her face taunt with pain, mouth grim, walked into the elevator, said nothing and waited for the doors to open on the third floor. She set down her books on the desk, sat on the bed and looked around.
“God if you don’t help me who else can I turn to? Right now there is no one, no one who has answers. I am ready to do this your way. No matter how hard, your way is always the best way, I know that now, but I need you to help me make the crooked straight. I’m helpless, I’m scared, and I don’t know which way to turn. I don’t know what to do. God please don’t leave me, even though I have totally messed everything up.”
She got up and looked out the window, the sun was setting and one bird was singing outside her window in the tree. She watched the bird sing against the beautiful sunset. Her mind wandered back to her children church days of learning memory verses “. . . I will never leave you nor forsake you.” That scripture verse of Hebrews 13:5 came running back into her mind like a lost glove that was found in the bottom of the pocket, just when you needed it most. She took a deep breath, smiled, grabbed her jacket and went to dinner. The night air was cold but the chill left her as she put on her jacket and decided to call home after dinner.
