I was returning home after visiting my mother who was staying with my brother after my Dad passed away. I was going to travel by train with five heavy packages and my four year old son. Before we left the house my mother offered a teary prayer pleading with God to take us safely and grant us all the help that we would need in our journey.
We had no reservation as it was the holiday season and the train was packed with tourists. I just stood at one place holding the hand of Paul unable to push through the throng. I said to myself I would get into whatever coach stops in front of me. Nobody got down from the coach that stopped in front of me and it was fully packed. I did not know how to get in with a little boy that needed help to get in and five heavy packages that had to be carried. Paul started getting anxious and cried, “Mom let us get in or the train will leave us and go.” Hearing Paul’s cry a face looked out of the window and stared at both of us. I got very scared to see this fat bearded man with large eyes staring at us and did not know what to do. I could hear him talking to the others in a language that was not very familiar to me. The next thing I know was he was standing in front of me. He asked me in English if I had to travel in this train. I nodded too frightened to say anything. He said, “You wait here.” He then picked up my son; called two other men who got down and carried my luggage and then he asked me to follow him.
The coach was full, every seat was taken, but people respected him and made room for us. Paul told him that he wanted a window seat. He said something and the people moved and he let Paul have the window seat and a woman who was sitting in the opposite seat made room for me. Paul was happily talking to him, whereas I was reluctant to even have a glance at him as the face was so scary. All of a sudden Paul started rubbing his eyes and crying and I got up to pick him up. He talked to the child in a gentle tone, and told me, “You sit down daughter; I will take him to the rest room and wash his eye. He did; and I thanked him with teary eyes. I learnt a great lesson that day. Do not judge people by their appearance.
