"May I have a cup of coffee?"
The speaker was a grizzled old man named Floyd. Tina knew him well. Floyd's weathered face and missing teeth spoke volumes of a very hard life.
"Help yourself," Tina replied softly.
Floyd gave a quick smile before focusing his attention to the coffee. He put in one packet of sugar and then another until it seemed the cup would overflow.
"You have a sweet tooth, Floyd," Tina said with a smile.
Floyd drank the cup down in one gulp, wiped his mouth, and said, "I do."
"Can I pray for you, Floyd?"
"I don't think God cares about me."
"Of course he does, Floyd. How can I pray for you?"
"I would like to see my daughter again."
Tina could see Floyd had a hard time getting the words out without breaking down. She always felt uncomfortable bringing up painful feelings in others.
"Where is your daughter, Floyd?"
"A couple blocks from here, but she doesn't want anything to do with me. She's given up on me just like God has."
Tina thought about contradicting his words, but she decided to merely pray and let God do his work. Tina stood, put her hand on Floyd, and prayed, "Father, please bless Floyd and help him to be able to see his daughter. Help him to know your love and help his daughter to receive him with love. Amen."
"You pray good, Tina."
"Thank you, Floyd."
"May I have another cup?"
"Of course."
Floyd prepared his coffee as before and then walked away. Tina sat back down and checked her cell phone. She sighed as she realized that it was time to go. Her shift started in twenty minutes and she would have just enough time to make it. She was never late. She packed up, placed her box on her rolling cart, and began to make her way back to her car.
"Repent and turn to Jesus."
Tina turned instinctively as she recognized Veronica's voice. Veronica stood on a bench with a large sign that read 'REPENT' in bold, red letters. Tina stopped as she watched Veronica boldly declare her faith in Jesus. Tina wanted so much to be that bold, but it just wasn't in her nature. She was comfortable speaking softly and praying for those who came to her. Veronica stood boldly for Jesus and proclaimed his name loudly and proudly. Suddenly Tina remembered the time and rushed off to her car. She drove as quickly as possible making it just in time. She donned her waitress uniform and immediately got to work. She walked over to a table where a tired looking young woman sat pensively.
"What can I do for you?" Tina asked with a smile.
The woman looked up and said, "That's the first smile I've seen in a very long time."
"My pleasure. What can I do for you?"
"Can you give me a new life?"
"No, but I can pray for you."
"I'd like that."
Tina slid into the booth next to the woman and prayed, "Father help my new friend to have a new life. May she know your love and your salvation, Jesus. Amen."
Tina stood back to her feet, but the woman just wept.
"Thank you so much. You have no idea what that meant to me."
Tina smiled and replied, "I think I do."
On her knees by her bed at the end of the day Tina prayed, "Lord thank you for allowing me to bless others in your name today. Jesus, thank you for giving me the power to minister in your name. I may not be as bold as Veronica to stand for you, but I do what I can. Please help it be enough."
