Topic: LOVE (agape and/or phileo) (03/12/15)
The room is filled with a sense of awe. People crowd in to witness the spectacle. Great men, men of learning and righteousness far surpassing that of the average religious follower, are entering one by one. Each man enters proudly as he displays the great wealth that he has procured through his great cunning and wisdom. God surely has blessed those who have worked hard and followed the letter of the law. And so they come to deposit their wealth into the treasury. The treasury must overflow for that is God's will. He requires it, but only the great men can truly please God. Only these can make the coffers overflow. The people gasp as each of the great men outdoes the next. Surely these are pious men. Surely these love God far more deeply than they, mere peasants, ever can. God has showered his blessings upon those who are the most pious; those who love the law the most deeply.

The day is long past and only a few remain to watch. Most have long sense grown weary of the spectacle and headed home. A woman, a peasant, clearly not favored by God due to her poverty, struggles to reach the room before it is closed for the day. She has labored hard and her body is frail. She holds tightly gripped in her right fist a mere pittance. The amount is not worth picking up off the ground for the great men. She steps inside but none pay her any mind. She is not worthy of even a look. She shuffles forward and drops her small coins into the great treasury. They register not at all and she quickly bows her head and walks back out the door. She wonders where her next meal will come; if it will come at all.

In the far corner the greatest man of all sits among his disciples. He has been watching the coming and going all day. He turns to those around him and says, "That woman has given more than all the others. Her love exceeds them all by far."

The disciples wonder at his words as they often do. He has turned their idea of love on its head and they sit silently in confusion. Love is about cost and one day the greatest man will demonstrate the greatest love of all.

The woman walks slowly along, but she is not alone. Her heavenly Father looks down with a smile. She has loved deeply and such love will not be forgotten.

It is easier to give out of abundance than our of our need. I would like to think I would give my last "coin" but just last week when the Lord impressed on me that I was to give a friend a number of new tops I ran onto in a yard sale for 1.00 a piece... I didn't have joy right away and was a little miffed. Am I proud of that? No, but it showed me something about myself I thought I was long over. Everything we have is His, I know that... so I pray He helps me act like it. Thanks for your article and reminder of how much so little can mean to our Father.

It is such a shame that so many people are looked down on, simply because they are poor, even today.
