At the age of nineteen, I had given birth to two children; one being seventeen months older than the other. I was unmarried and living, with my aunt and uncle, who agreed I could leave the children with them and go and try to make a better life for myself; then later come back for them.
I left my children because I thought it was the best thing to do. I just knew I was inadequate to care for two young children at the age of nineteen years old. I believed they would be better off with my aunt and uncle. In my later years, I have come to understand that the decisions I made, in my very young life, l were because I wanted to do what was best for the children; inwardly I knew I was not the best for them. One can’t do what one doesn’t know how to do.
I am saying all, but, there are many women, for whatever reason, have made the same decision as I did. Some have even given their children up for adoption – not because they didn’t want the children, but because they saw themselves, and in turn saw a child or children who would need so much more than they could possible give them. Please know, I am not pleading my case. In searching myself, and in talking with others in similar circumstances, I know there is much more to any story than society, who puts labels on everything, is able to see.
So many women in my same, or similar condition, grieve daily because they cannot, or never will have any connection with their children again. But, I now know that God is reading the heart and He knows. Didn’t He give His son away? Wasn’t His giving, too, done out of love. This makes love real to me – God’s actions! Read John 3:16.
There is a story in the Bible in the Book of Kings, chapter 3 where King Solomon has to make a decision between two women who lived in the same dwelling. Both had babies, which, the Bible tells us, “were born three days apart.” As the story goes, one of the women rolled over on her child, the child was smothered, or crushed, and died. The woman. Woke up at midnight, discovered the child was dead, and took the other woman’s living child and put her dead child in it’s place. When the other woman arose to nurse her child, she saw that it was dead, and at the same time saw that the dead child, in her bed, wasn’t her baby.
The two came to stand before the King. Neither would relent; so the King decides he’ll cut the child in half and give each one a part. The real mother cries out, “No! Give the child to her!” Thus, before she would see her child cut in half, the real mother is willing to let the other woman have him. Here, we see a real mother’s love, and on this, did King Solomon base his final decision. He gives the child to the real mother. How did he know? The real mother would rather do without living with her child rather than see the child harmed. Love will do whatever it takes because that’s what love does.
My heart goes out to the many who have given their children up for adoption and now wondering, with great heartache, where the children are; or, how did their lives turn out; while people will say, “What kind of mothers are they to leave their children, or give them up for adoption?”
On the other hand, there are children who do come to know their real parents. Some spend a lifetime causing hurt to the parent because of the heartbreaking decision the parent had to make. My mother left me. She died when I was seven years old. Should she be hated? She had no control over her situation; neither did I. My mind was not equipped; same as with many others
For those of you who are still feeling pain from a decision you felt the need to make, know this: God is a forgiving, all knowing God! One can only do what one knows how to do – the most important being, as written in the Book of Proverbs, “Trust in the Lord with all your hear, and lean not to your own understanding.”
