What Sammy lacked in physical stamina he made up in academic excellence. He loved to read and since his father’s library consisted mainly of religious books, Sammy became interested in the Bible. His father encouraged him and bought him a big Bible with concordance and dictionary. Naturally, much to his brothers’ annoyance, Sammy spent a lot of time with his father. They teased him about it and called him Rabbi Samuel. They also made fun of his pet, Ollie.
One day, Greg brought a new pet, a kitten. He named him King Arthur, and called him Artie. Like all kittens, Artie was playful and active, unlike poor Ollie. He soon realized that Ollie was no threat and joined the boys in tormenting the dog. Ollie hated him and growled and barked in frustration.
It was one of those cloudy days in summer. A severe storm had been forecast for that night. Late that night the storm arrived with loud thunder and lightning. Since the day of the accident, Ollie was scared of fireworks and thunder. Whining in terror he jumped onto Sammy’s bed and snuggled near Sammy. The storm became violent. Thunder crashed, lightning streaked across the sky and the wind tore through the treetops. Above all this turmoil Sammy heard a strange cry.
Wondering what the sound was, Sammy opened his door and found a scared and trembling Artie, meowing pathetically. He picked him up and carried him to his bed. Ollie lifted his head and growled at the cat.The kitten meowed again and snuggled closer to Sammy. Ollie sensed the kitten’s fear and stopped growling and softly sniffed over him. Emboldened Artie huddled closer, and soon all three were fast asleep.
The next morning, at breakfast, Greg said, “What happened to Artie? I can’t find him in his basket in the kitchen.”
“He slept with me and Ollie in my bed. He was scared of the storm”, Sammy said.
“That’s impossible! Ollie hates him. And Artie doesn’t like him. How could that happen?”
“Maybe our learned Rabbi Samuel could explain this. Maybe he could even preach a sermon on this subject. What do you think, Dad?” Doug quipped in, confident that he had Sammy in a spot.
“I am sure he could,” the Pastor said as he nodded at Sammy.
“In the presence of a common threat it is possible that former enemies might bury there hatred and form and alliance. This is what happened in the case of Ollie and Artie. Because they were both afraid of the storm, they joined together to find safety and comfort.”
“Do we have a scripture reference for this Rabbi Samuel,” Greg joked.
“Yes I do, during the trial of Jesus, Pilate and the Herod, were both threatened with Jesus’ popularity and power. Although they were enemies they dropped their differences and became friends.”
“Scripture reference, please, “asked Doug.
“Sure. Give me a minute.”
Sammy ran up to his room and got his Bible.
“Here it is- in the Gospel of Luke chapter 23 and verse 12,
‘And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together for before they were at enmity between themselves.’ (KJV)
“Bravo, my son,” the pastor beamed, “One day you will become a great Bible scholar.” Sammy glowed at his father’s praise.
