He lamented to himself, “What am I going to do?”
Susan was also on that highway at 8:40. She was in no hurry because she was dreading her destination. Just yesterday someone from the doctor’s office called and asked her to come in to speak with the doctor.
“It’s never good news when they ask you to come in!” The thoughts overwhelmed her so much that she did not notice a semi-truck that swerved toward her vehicle as she passed it. She arrived and sat in her parked car, seized by her thoughts , for 10 minutes.
In the exam room her mind wandered, “I just know those test results are bad!” Her heartbeat and heavy breathing were the only sounds, but her thoughts thundered, “I know I have cancer that will have no cure!” She sank further and further into her chair. The doctor walked in.
Mike was working construction that morning, though not with the highway crew as he had for the past week. The night before he received a call from his boss that sent him to a back road that needed resurfacing. It also required him to be there half-hour earlier. In the past 8:00 am start time was only an inconvenience, but nowadays it was a big deal and made him anxious. It really put a wrench in his morning routine. Before leaving for the work site he had to take care of his three young children; fix breakfast, pack lunches, find a babysitter for one and get the other two to school. He had no help. Just 6 months ago his wife of ten years left him.
“Will she ever return? When will the money run out?” His mind wandered as he ran the asphalt paver. “How long can I do this?”
He peeked down at his watch and sighed, “Break time will be soon and I forgot change for the vending machine.”
Charles was driving his semi-truck after a multiple deliveries. The highway seemed extra crowded and the empty trailer swayed from side to side in the wind, but not more than he could handle. He yawned and thought skipping sleep was probably not wise, but he was anxious to get home. It was 8:45 a.m. and in just one short hour he would be there. Though his eyes were open, his mind fell asleep and he did not react when his 20,000 pound truck crossed the center line and violently smashed through oncoming traffic. For 5 endless minutes the sounds of metal twisting and crushing penetrated the morning air. The semi’s cab and trailer separated. The contorted trailer toppled into a ditch and the cab landed on a construction site of workers. Moaning and screaming arose to the sky, but Charles was unconscious with no thoughts of how this would sting many lives.
Life ‘barks’ with its inconveniences, annoyances and worries. Fears that can make us feel desperate and hopeless because we cannot see the end of it all. The barks say ‘the worst is to come.’ Then reality hits and life ‘bites.’ Though there are barks and bites in this world there is always hope. A hope that can replace the barks of ‘the worst is to come’ with ‘the best is yet to come!’ This hope is found in trusting the Lord Jesus Christ. He said, “In this world you will have tribulation. But be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (Jn 16:33 KJV) The best is yet to come, because believing in Jesus as your savior will give you an eternal life with him where there are no worries, no tears and no troubles.
Have no fear of wherever you are on the highway of life because the barks are always worse than the bites when you put your trust and hope in Jesus.
