The best part is that a kazoo can be played by anyone. As a second-grader, the kazoo turned myself and my classmates into true musicians.
Our teacher, Mr. Hubard, handed out the kazoos and explained how we were to hum. And hum we did--mostly off key but we hummed.
As the year went by, our little group mastered such ditties as "Twinkle,
Twinkle, Little Star," "Turkey in the Straw," and "Jingle Bells."
By the end of the school term, our class was ready for our big debut. We marched out on the stage with our little red submarines. Our parents glowed with joy. Mr. Hubard looked on with delight. We sailed along with our songs in complete synch.
We began the finale with "Mary, Mary had a little Lamb." Suddenly, Billy broke ranks with "Row, Row, Your Boat." The audience gasped as two songs echoed through the auditorium. Billy's parents turned red and slid down in their seats. It seemed Billy played even louder. Several of us were confused and joined Billy. Now the cacophony of hums sounded more like a bad rendition of the "Flight of the Bumblebee." Mr. Hubard waved his arms wildly and covered his ears. His effort to restore order caused the audience to erupt into laughter. Many in the audience had tears rushing down their face. Others were holding their sides with belly laughter. Finally, the music screeched to a halt. The audience jumped to their feet with wild applause. We bowed and Mr. Hubard turned ashen.
The response from the audience convinced our small band that we had become master musicians of the might kazoo!
