Studying the words of Jesus left me with the reality that I could not understand it as well as I wished. Jesus used parables about how things grow, about animals, and different situations which a farmer would easily grasp. I was a city girl. I love Jesus. I wanted and needed more facts.
My husband’s father was born in 1913 on the farm of his parents. He lived on that farm and helped his parents until he was 21 years old. He was a staunch atheist ten years ago when I so desperately wanted the information that he should be able to share with me.
Walking to my father-in-law’s front door, ding-dong went the door bell as we waited for him to answer and invite us inside to visit. We had a weekly routine of visiting after church as he was in his 90s and alone. He loved the interruption to his lonely daily schedule. Normally, we sat and listened while he took the rare opportunity to talk to others, but this particular Sunday was different. This Sunday, I began asking questions about farming. My questions concerned sowing and reaping of the crops. What crops did Grandpa and Grandma plant in their fields? How do you know when to plant? How do you know when to harvest your crops? How many acres did they have? What animals did they have in their barn? How often did Grandpa milk the cows? How much milk do you get from a cow? What do you do with it besides drink it as milk? He eagerly answered my questions. It made him feel so important for me to want to know what he had to share. I never let on that I wanted the knowledge to understand the Bible. I was thrilled to acquire the information and he was thrilled to give it to me. This line of questions and answers continued on for many, many Sunday visits.
In 2008 the economy changed our lives. We were forced into an early retirement that we were unprepared for; or were we unprepared? God’s plan for our lives took a turn that we could never have expected, but we totally believe we are where we belong. We moved north, bought a farm, and have chickens, ducks, and farm animals. We have acres of hay to feed those animals that we tend.
If you would have told me ten years ago that this would be my future life, I would have said you were daft. We thought that we were set for life in the home that we lived in and the jobs that we held. Obviously, God knew better. We now believe that He gave us the driving desire to gain information that we use on a daily basis today. We are so blessed that we are not making our own way through this life. Many times, He sets up our needs before those needs arrive.
