My father scrimped and saved until his dream came true. The black coupe seemed like a brand new vehicle to him. He used it to run errands, take trips into the country for picnics, and transportation for fishing and hunting trips.
The car cornered roads like a sports car and climbed twisted mountain roads with ease. Dad polished it weekly with soft chammies and waxed it several times a year. He kept it in great running condition at all times.
No matter what the weather brought, the coupe handled it--especially winter snows and sleet. It seemed to go through 10-12 inches with ease. My father believed the vehicle could go through any amount. One day, we had about two feet of snow. My father was determined he was going to work. He revved up the engine, threw the car in gear, floored the accelerator and tore through the snow. Just about the time he thought he would make it to the top of the hill, the car flew into a big drift. There sat my father shaking his head with disbelief. He got out, found some old carpet and a shovel. Together, he created some traction. It wasn't long before the car went over the top of the hill. Dad was off to work with a big smile on his face.
After about five years, my father bought a new truck. He never stopped talking about the old black coupe and what a thrill it was to have owned it. He spoke how it had provided needed transportation for work and errands and for freedom to enjoy the world around him. Vehicles came and went but the old black coupe remained my father's favorite.
