“Something about this whole place is suddenly so beautiful,” she said as she looked up at her husband. The tears on Joseph’s face streamed down to his chin then onto the ground. “He is beautiful,” said Joseph, “everything is beautiful.”
The innkeeper came out to the stable where they were to make sure the animals were fed and to make sure that his unusual guests were OK. The night before, he had been distraught that he was unable to provide any room for this couple, one of whom was pregnant. He had thought about the ridiculous notion of putting these special guests in his stable for safe keeping overnight, but he was surprised that the couple was amenable to his offer.
On his way to the stable, the innkeeper passed by a group of shepherds, who appeared to be bewildered as they walked with their flock almost in a daze. The innkeeper walked quickly to the stable to see Mary and Joseph huddled around a feeding trough. Joseph’s arm was around Mary as they looked down with amazement at what lay in the manger.
This would be beautiful, thought the innkeeper, if they weren’t in a dirty stable blocking the manger from my animals. He walked over to find a baby lying in the manger wearing nothing but rags. He didn’t know why, but for that moment, the innkeeper saw such beauty in that place. “This stable has never been so beautiful,” he said as he looked at Mary who appeared exhausted, with sweaty hair matted on her face. “This is the most beautiful moment I have ever witnessed,” said the innkeeper with a smile.
The animals even seemed reverent as they stood in a seemingly awed state. They were uninterested in the food that the innkeeper had brought. The sun’s glow on Mary’s face punctuated the joy in the beautiful child that lay beneath her. There was something more beautiful about this child than any other child that had ever been born, the innkeeper thought.
“There’s something about this child,” said the innkeeper, “that’s going to change the world.” Mary looked up at Joseph, and Joseph tightened his embrace. This child, thought Mary, already has changed the world. “You are most blessed among women,” continued the innkeeper, “most blessed to have a child so beautiful.”
The innkeeper walked away in amazement and indescribable joy. The baby boy looked up at his mother and smiled a beautiful smile. Joy emanated throughout the room. The animals seemed to jump for joy and to praise the Lord with dance. Mary looked at Joseph. Their hearts seemed to beat in one beautiful rhythm as Mary resolved to keep all these beautiful things in her heart.
