About a half of an hour later he heard a horn blare. His whole body shook as he pulled back into the correct lane.
Five minutes later, he noticed a red light flashing in his mirror. Pulling over, he rolled his window down.
The officer shined a flashlight in his face. "May, I see your driver's license?"
After verifying the license, the officer stepped back from the car. "Sir, get out and step to the rear of the car!"
"What's the problem officer?" Fred hobbled out of his car.
"You're wearing a collar. That’s all we need in this world are drunk priests. You're under arrest for being under the influence." Fred raised his hands in the air and the officer patted him down.
"No, you don't understand."
"Hush!" The officer slapped the cuffs on him and shoved him into the back seat of the squad car and slammed the door.
The officer slid into the police cruiser, squealed the tires, and they sped off.
"Okay, Farther Fred, we're going to get a blood sample from you and see how drunk you are."
"Officer, first I'm a pastor, not a priest. I'm guilty of being tired, not drunk. I need to get to Minneapolis to see a friend who's on life support."
The officer looked at Fred in his rear view mirror. "Yeah right, everyone says they're innocent. Just wait till the test comes back. Just think, I'll get another drunk off the street."

A few hours later, the officer shuffled into the holding cell hanging his head. The officer shook his shoulder. "Pastor Fred, wake up."
"Huh?" The pastor sat up and rubbed his eyes.
The officer's hands shook as he held some papers. "You won't be charged with drunk driving because there was no alcohol in your blood. I should have followed procedure and given you a breathalyzer test . My dad died as a result of a drunk driver, and I let my emotions get out of whack. I'm sorry I took my anger out on you."
Fred yawned as he stretched his arms. "I forgive you."
The officer sat on the cot and exhaled loudly. "Thank you for forgiving me. I stopped you because we had a complaint, that you were swerving back and forth, and almost forced someone off of the road. I can‘t let you drive. I've talked to a manager of a local motel about your situation. He's going to let you stay overnight for free. You can pick up your car at the impound lot tomorrow."
Pastor Fred stood up and shook the officer's hand. "I had a very long day and was more tired than I thought. I wanted to be with my friend Tim. I'll pray for you as you mourn your dad's death."
The officer walked with Fred to the squad car. "I am sorry to hear about your friend. I hope he recovers from his accident."

Good story telling.
God bless~
Good job of conveying that "we are all human" idea (make mistakes)through the cop's emotional mistake, and the Pastors mistake of driving too sleepy.
