“Good morning, Annie. I just couldn’t help myself.” Maude’s eyes twinkled as she scrunched her nose and giggled. “Seeing you lost in deep thought, with such a serene look on your face, touched my heart, and I just had to hug you. I hope I didn’t startle you too much. What has you so transfixed you didn’t even hear me creeping up behind you? Perhaps a Bible verse.”
“Oh Maude, you know me so well. I know you have experienced this, and you will understand what I’m about to tell you. I’ve read Psalm 119:103 many times, but this morning it were as if God spoke these words to me. ‘How sweet your words taste to me; they are sweeter than honey.’ It was such a wonderful, peaceful moment, and I was completely consumed by it. Get yourself some coffee and grab one of those sticky buns.”
“Good coffee, good honey buns -- sticky buns as you call them, good company and God’s living word. What could possibly be better? I know what you’re talking about. It has happened to me so many times. It’s amazing how the Lord patiently opens our eyes to certain scriptures demonstrating the importance of them throughout our lives.”
“That’s so true Maude. God uses situations to teach us and what better way than using the sweetness of sticky buns. They are sweet to the taste, but the words in the Bible taste sweet to our hearts, because they lead to eternal life.”
“Ah, Annie that’s so true. His words soothe troubled spirits, heal hurting hearts and He guides us to the right path. Another good verse that speaks about the sweetness of God’s word is found in Proverbs 16:24. ‘Kind words are like honey--sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.’ God, in His love, never ceases to amaze me. If He wasn’t in my life I’d wander around in circles confused and lost.”
Annie reached over and picked up her Bible flipping through the pages and stopped at Proverbs 27:9-11. “Oh, this one describes what is in my heart and reminds me how grateful I am to have a friend like you. ‘The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense. Never abandon a friend--either yours or your father’s. When disaster strikes, you won’t have to ask your brother for assistance. It is better to go to a neighbor than to a brother who lives far away. Be wise, my child, and make my heart glad.’ That’s how I feel.”
Maude pointed her finger, raised her eyebrow scrunched up her nose trying not to laugh. “Now, now, Annie don’t get all mushy ‘cause I don’t like soggy honey buns with my coffee. It kind of puts a damper on such an auspicious occasion as this.”
Maude’s raised eyebrow and scrunched nose caused me to explode with laughter. We sat there laughing with tears running down our cheeks. I reached over and clasped Maude’s hands.
“Oh, Maude, I love you. It’s good having a friend with whom I can share my life with.”
