At least one of them probably said, “I’m so glad I heard He was coming!”
To pass the time and quiet their nerves, they, no doubt, chatted along the highway during the heat of the day into the evening and nibbled on snacks such as grapes, figs and honey. Some probably ate pistachio nuts and raisins.
Eventually, the words they had longed to hear pierced the anxious night air, “The bridegroom is coming! The bridegroom is coming!”
They most likely scrambled to gather their belongings, grabbing hold of the hem of their long garments to allow their swift feet to move freely.
“I don’t have enough oil in my lamp. “I’ll get lost. Can I borrow some of yours?”
“I only have enough for my own lamp. Go find an oil seller and purchase your own. “ Five ran to find a vendor.
Doubtless, the banquet hall was lavishly displayed with what appeared to be the mother of all potluck dinners, but this would be a special gathering. For this potluck dinner, none of the attendees had to bring a dish.
The food table most likely extended as far as the eye could see. In all probability, foods of all kinds were on display: fish, lamb, goat, beef with the oils still dripping from its roasting. There must have been breads of all kinds spread out on the table: barley, sorghum, wheat. Doubtless, soups of lentils and beans, and chickpeas were prepared in large vats. Luscious bowls of grapes and melons, pomegranates and dates most likely filled the table with splendor. And what is any wedding without countless vats of wine?
As the five virgins were about to take their seats, they could hear a banging on the door.
“Let us in, let us in”, but not only was the door firmly shut, it was firmly locked. One of the wise ones probably with repentance in her eyes said, “If we had only found a way to share our oil, they too, could have joined in the banquet. There is so much food, too much for us to eat ourselves. Now look, we cannot share this feast with our friends. We should have made sure they had a supply of oil for their lamps and now it is too late.”
