definitions of potluck. One definition
indicates what is available. Usually,
potluck is associated with food. When
I think of potluck, I am reminded of a
wonderful week-end blessed with potluck
food and potluck friends.
I was a student in Bible College
and quickly accumulated new friends.
One of my new friends included a
bouncy, spirit-filled blonde girl from
Pennsylvania. Another friend was a
dark-eyed black-headed shy young man
from the Philippines. He spoke several
languages and was musically inclined.
My friend from Northern Virginia was
an intellect. He studied theology and
poetry. Together, we welded a tight
friendship. We spent hours listening
to music, reading poetry and discussing
the Word of God. It seemed where one
went, the rest followed.
One week-end we decided to go to
the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia
for hiking. We planned our trip to
include meditation, God's wonders, and
long mountains trails.
It was late at night when we
crossed the West Virginia state line.
As we topped a high mountain crest, we
saw a large field engulfed with a full
autumn moon. It was so bright, we
realized we hardly needed a flash
light. We grabbed granola bars, fruit,
juice and water. We laid out our
potluck meal on a red-checkered blanket
under the moon and stars. We used a
small flashlight to read from Genesis
and Psalms. After our devotations and
thanksgiving to God for such a
beautiful place to share a meal and
time together, we read from Sandburg
and Frost. We pulled out our battery-
operated cassette player and listened
to Dylan, Peter, Paul and Mary and
John Denver We joined hands and sang
"Amazing Grace," "How Great Thou Art,"
and "We are One in the Spirit."
As we looked toward a distance
knoll, we saw a deer staring at us. He
sniffed the air and flicked his tail.
In the moonlight, his silhouette shined
against the horizon.
We were truly potluck friends
sharing a potluck meal provided by the
mighty hand of God. Although we have
gone our separate ways, we still stay
in touch. Through the years, we have
maintained our potluck friendship
because it was cemented by God's
special glue--His Spirit.

The only thing I'd suggest is to leave out the definition. It isn't vital to the story and sets it up as more of an essay than the delightful walk down memory lane that it really is.
You covered the topic and made the characters feel like old friends. I could visualize the deer and the full moon and the story left me with a warm feeling. Nice job.
