Topic: Fragrance (10/24/05)
The rich bouquet of smells, odors, and fragrances that accost a motorcycle rider is one of the most appealing aspects of riding a two-wheeled chrome and metal horse. An olfactory stimulator may be an acrid, sharp smell of a pig farm, or the sweet, subtle scent of clover harvested in early Summer. Two-wheel riding friends from the metro-Detroit area often cringe at those farm odors and the unmistakable pungent stench of a sewage disposal facility. However, those aromas are indicative of our modern society. The same riders do enjoy the gentle whiff of wild flowers and a moist breeze from Lake Huron on sultry Michigan day. The spectrum and classification of the fragrances encountered in the breeze is as varied as the environments motorcyclists ride.

Some smells, like the rotting, musty stink from a bog, swamp, or marsh mask the process of life produced from dying vegetation. That putrid odor tainted with ammonia is necessary nutrient for beautiful flowers, shrubs, and trees.

Counting and categorizing natural scents produces a litany of reasons to praise God for His marvelous creation. Each fragrance is a unique and distinct. They are sensory clarification of God’s varied and amazing greenhouse.

Natural fragrances are like people we encounter. Some are sweet, delicious, and soothing while others assail us like noxious, repugnant, offensive smells that literally take our breath away. Even so, our sensual perception is superficial. People who are caustic and offensive may have something happening within their lives that provide an opportunity for us…as Christians…to witness, or to cause growth in our faith and trust in Jesus as we interact with them.

The ultimate question is about our personal fragrance as Paul says in 1st Corinthians Chapter 2 (15) For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing (16a) to the one an aroma from death to death, to the other an aroma from life to life. (New American Standard Bible).

Our prayer should be that our life be a refreshing, pleasing fragrance to God.

I wonder if this would have a better "flow" if it were organized differently: write about the bad odors, then do the spiritual application, then write about the sweet odors, and that application. By the way, I could practically smell them as you wrote: great descriptions.

I've met a few "noxious" people! Hopefully the scent of Jesus Christ on us will cause them to seek a sweeter fragrance with which to douse themselves! Thanks for a well written article:)
