But how can my human brain with its limited resources ever comprehend God the Father? How can I fathom the solemnly impressive, supremely dignified, and sublimely fearful majesty of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords? Isaiah described Him as:
“The Lord sitting on the throne, high and lifted up
And the train of His robe filled the temple
Above it stood the seraphim
Each one has six wings – with two he covered his face
With two he covered his feet and with two he flew
And one cried to another and said:
Holy, holy, holy to the Lord of Hosts
And the whole earth is filled with His glory
And the posts of the doors were shaken
By the voice of him who cried out.
And the house was filled with smoke.”
The brightness of His purity blinded the angels and they had to cover their faces with two wings. God’s presence was so hallowed, sacred and holy that they were scared to walk on the threshold. They covered their feet with another pair of wings and used the last pair of wings to fly around. The whole place vibrated as their voices cried, “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts. The whole earth is full of Your glory.”
In my human mind I try to visualize this majestic scene – God almighty seated on His throne in all His awesome glory, His regal robe flowing all over the temple floor, His imperial power filling every nook and corner like smoke. Like the princely prophet, Isaiah, I was standing in the presence of God almighty. Trembling in fear I realize I am under judgment and am condemned. The only thing that stands between me and a heap of ashes is the precious robe of righteousness purchased for me by my Savior on the cross of shame and agony. It is a fearful vision.
I may never understand the greatness and august authority of God, the Father. But what little I know of His awesomeness will drive me to my knees in contrite humility every time I enter His sanctuary. Although I am clothed in the robe washed in my Savior’s blood, I can never take advantage of that robe and forget the awful power of God the Father.
Did not God call Israel, “Thou worm, Jacob.”? (Is.14:14.) And did not David say, “I am a worm and no man.”? (Ps.22:6) Compared to them who am I to think that I am any better in God’s sight? One day God will ask me, “If I am God, where is My glory?” I pray that God will grant me wisdom to worship Him with all the reverence and respect His glory demands and never foolishly enter the holy ground where angels fear to tread.
