“Yes, sweetheart . . . .”
Little Katy sits with her chin in her hands and her elbows propped on the window sill while she stares out of the big plate-glass window. She has just turned four-years-old and is in deep thought. There are so many things to learn at this age. Dad is all settled in his favorite chair reading the paper.
“Dad -- what is e-ter-nity?”
“Eternity? Well, it’s a long-long time. Where did you hear that word . . . why do you ask?”
“Yesterday, in Sunday school class, Miss Chambers talked about it. She said if we ask Jesus to come into our heart, we would live with Him in heaven for all of e-ter-nity. Dad . . . how long is that?”
“It is hard for us to think about it because there is no end to eternity; it just goes on and on and on.”
“Wow, is that longer than tomorrow?”
“Yes, and the next day and the next day and the day after that.”
“ . . . and the day after that too?” Katy wonders.
“Yes, precious, it is as long as . . . love.”
“It is?”
“That must be a long, long time because I love you and mommy a long, long time. Maybe even for e-ter-nity.”
For a moment she is distracted watching the neighbor’s cat chase the birds in the front yard, but she is still thinking.
“Daddy?”
“Yes, Katy?
“We sang a song in Sunday school that says that Jesus loves me. Does He love me that long too?”
“The song is right. Jesus does love us. He loved us before we were born and will love us throughout all of eternity. His love never ends.”
After a few moments of contemplation, Katy has another question. She leaves the safety of her perch, pulls Dad’s paper aside and looks deep into his eyes. She must be able to see his face when he answers.
“Dad . . . Dad? Does Jesus still love me even . . . even . . . when I’m bad?” Her blue eyes twinkle with moisture and are big with anticipation of the answer of such an important question.
Dad lays his paper aside and lifts her into his lap. He must make this answer very clear and puts on his most serious face.
“Yes . . . He especially loves you when you are bad, and it makes Him feel bad that you are hurting yourself that way. He really wants you to say you are sorry and to do right things, but He will love you forever and for all eternity.”
“Wow! Know what, Dad?”
“No, what?”
“I love Him too. I love Him for all e-ter-nity and forever and forever and forever.”
“I love you too, you sweet little muffin, forever and for all eternity.” Katy throws her chubby little arms around her daddy’s neck and squeezes as tight as she can.
“I love you too, Daddy, and mommy too, forever and for all, all, all of e-ter-nity.”
