When Eve in Eden gravely erred
And ate of the tree forbidden;
Did she cry ''oops'' or "whoops" or "woops"?
Who ne'er asked pardon for her sin.
When Cain in envy slew Abel,
Which meditatively he did;
What cry of regret could offer
An apology for his deed?
When Esau sold his true birthright,
That man, profane, who lost his chance;
His cries and tears did sound like ''oops'',
Who found no place for repentance.
When Noah was drunk and naked lay
And Ham his son came in and saw;
Exclaiming ''whoops'' would not atone
For what he did; who wept not sore.
When Judas sold his Friend and Lord
And sat at eve with Him to dine;
No ''woops'' could wipe his guilt that pricked,
Who showed remorse, but not in time.
When David slept with Bethsheba
And killed her valiant husband too;
He cried not, "oops", but prayed to God,
And found mercy, whose heart was true.
In times of error or mistake,
With contrite hearts let's pray to God,
No outcry of words will e'er do;
For ''Oops'' is such a senseless word.
