Topic: Luggage (08/15/05)
It took me by surprise. My ten year old daughter, after a talk about who-knows-what; a mother-daughter discussion where the mother- me- probably did all the talking (lecturing?) “Mommy, sometimes I feel like just a piece of luggage you and daddy carry around from one place to another.”

Say what? Where on earth did that come from?

My husband and I diligently try to protect our family time. We purposefully don’t over schedule activities; have a business we own and run at home to spend time with our family; are involved in their schooling and church activities- yet she still feels lugged around.

I just don’t get it. But then, I’m “the mom”- and all my memories of my own mother’s failings come flooding back. Her many mistakes and failures all washed over by the one indisputable fact that I was loved. Without question- although adolescence paid it’s call in our home, and was disruptive, the fact of my parent’s love bridged the gap.

And don’t I have something even greater to give my daughter: not just my worldly love, but an introduction to the One who created her and loves her with an everlasting love? My childhood home had no knowledge of Him; but this home does. And my daughter knows Him. She knows where to go, to Whom to talk when she is inevitably “misunderstood” by her mom. I am thankful that His love bridges my failings with a deep and wide road. I trust that He will guide my words and actions so that I not be a stumbling block in her relationship with Him.

In the meantime, I need to grab my luggage- we have an appointment!

When your daughter becomes an adult (as mine have), it is the LOVE that she will remember, not the LUG. Nice essay.

Cute! I think it sums up the craziness of mothering very well! The confusion, the total effort we give to do it well, our memories of our mother. The short, sweet and to the point is even a great "picture" of the fast pace of mothering.

This is a funny story in which kids say the cutest things, but at the same time, a good story in which we need to take a step back at times to analyze what is going on. Although not a mother, thank you for this eye-opener. It can be applied to any situation!
