The filly, alone in the darkness, circled the stall and screamed for her mother. She pawed at the fresh pine shavings, reared and circled the stall again. Shavings thrown by the tiny hooves coated the walls.
Lily stood motionless. Her eyes fixed on the little filly. She felt the abandonment in her own life. Her chest hollow, their lives merged into one. Both orphaned and left alone to navigate the frightful world. Both were frantic in their journey to discover the snowy unknown. Each paralyzed by fear, they had forever lost the illusion of their own security.
The filly’s eyes flashed white as she struggled with the black hole threatening to swallow her. Loneliness hung heavy in the musty stall.
Lily could feel the air heavy on her lungs and wondered if this would be the end. She wondered if the filly would be overcome with darkness or like her find freedom in the light.
The filly let out a loud snort, blowing pine shaving onto the white blanket covering the paddock. Circling her stall one last time she reared, throwing her satin hooves high into the sky. Then, shifting all her weight to her haunches she vaulted over the threshold like a popped cork. She was free, a speeding locomotive, one, two, three times around the paddock, her tiny hooves thrusting snow cakes high in the air. With her victory laps complete, she came to a sliding stop. Frothy white foam dripped off her chest like the steamed milk of a latte. Her breath was heavy as she soaked up the warm rays of the sun.
Lily breathed in the sweet smell of triumph as the filly was reborn, washed in the white glow of the sun.
The Filly snorted, blowing smoke like a dragon. She lifted her tail high and pranced through the snow, pawing at the frozen earth as if demanding its respect. With a loud sigh, she folded all four knees in unison and collapsed onto the ground. Stretching out her neck, she became one with the snow, forming a large dirty Pegasus on the white earth as she rolled. With the paddock conquered, the filly stood and pranced. She head held high, stretching her magnificent legs as her silver color coat shimmered in the sun.
Relief soothed Lily’s aching soul. The light had shone through the darkness. The scars of life had been washed clean with the white robe of their maker.
