We escaped from our college in Florida as soon as we could at Christmas break. My two buddies lived in Pennsylvania and they agreed to drop me off at my grandparents’ house in North Carolina. We greatly enjoyed our trip up north as we normally did when we could get away from college for a while. Greg’s car was packed tightly with our stuff, but there was plenty of room to sit. Five weeks later, the situation had changed immensely.
Ben and Greg picked me up on the way back down to Florida. Since we were returning to college and we were traveling through the night, my mood at the time could not be defined as good. I went to get into the car and noticed that the entire back seat was full of their stuff. Luggage had multiplied over Christmas break! I realize that it is commonly assumed that the female gender accumulates the most junk while attending college, but my buddies and I apparently were trying to steal the females’ thunder. Greg assured me that all of my luggage would indeed fit in the car. He was proved right as were somehow were able to creatively load my suitcase, duffel bag, laptop, backpack, etc., into the car. Unfortunately, some of it had to go in the back seat where I had to sit. After much complicated maneuvering, I was able to clear myself some space to sit.
Imagine trying to sit in an airplane beside a 400-pound plus person! I found myself in nearly the same situation crammed between a not-so-comfortable wall of luggage that reached to the car’s ceiling in beside me and behind me, and an even less comfortable car door. I sat in the same position until we reached Florida some ten hours later. I vowed at that time that I had enough stuff and would never buy anything again, but when I left college for the final time after graduation, I could barely fit all of my belongings in one car. I shudder now when I have to pack the car because I envision myself crammed in the backseat of a small car. But fortunately the reality is better because I can now sit in the front seat of my Ford Taurus and all of my luggage will indeed fit in the trunk.
