TITLE: Artificial eyes--Real Love | Previous Challenge Entry

“Lisa, can you come over. I’ve lost my eye and can’t find it anywhere. I’ve looked and looked.” My mother was relatively calm but was in a dire predicament. Her prosthetic eye had fallen out and she couldn’t find it. I had a class I couldn’t miss so my husband and daughter, who was about 3 at the time went over.
They helped mom look all through the house and backyard. In case any of you are wondering, Mom was completely blind and both eyes were artificial but she still used normal words like “looked” or “watching TV.” My husband and daughter met me for lunch where Alex loudly announced, “We looked and looked but couldn’t find Grandma’s eye anywhere.” So the following Monday she made an appointment to have new eyes made.
Thus the real adventure began. Mom had to wear dark sunglasses to hide the fact she was missing an eye but the doctor assured her that he’d get right to work. The day for her fitting came and we arrived to a locked office. A scheduling glitch had him in his south county office so Mom was rescheduled.
Then something else went wrong and Mom asked me to start praying about the situation. So our Bible study group prayed weekly. About the 3rdh week into the wait I had to share with the group that the doctor had been in a car accident. My friend couldn’t even finish praying.
He was laughing too hard. Can you imagine if the doctor had inventory with him? Well my friend could and he just envisioned all these eyeballs on the freeway. They’re not actually balls but still, even Mom laughed at that one.
Finally 6 weeks after her first appointment Mom is called to come pick up her eyes. Back then I got the heebbie-jeebbies about her eyes so I waited while the doctor fit them. When I walked in I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. They had a grey, kind-of hazel tone to them, not the pretty blue I was used to.
Mom found her original eye not long after that. I didn’t like the new ones because they were too much like my brother’s. Mom just didn’t seem like Mom without her bright blue eyes. I know they were artificial but I swear I could see a mother’s love and pride in them.

You write often about your mom and its obvious what a special lady she was in your life. It is a fitting tribute you pay her by creating wonderful stories illustrating her strength.
