The sky was the darkest they had ever seen it on the open seas. The storm had come from nowhere, all was calm and peaceful when they left the Gallilean shores, no reason for fear.

Now, only hours later the tempest driven winds shook the fisherman’s craft from stem to stern. Waves began to crash the boat from every direction. There was no time to prepare for the next. The tiny boat was as helpless as a lone stalk of straw in a flood, tossing at the will of the waters.

All hands were fiercely fighting the winds and waves sending water gushing in from all sides. Torrents of rain pelted the men’s faces as together they tried to force water out of the vessel’s hull. The captain himself holding desperately to the mast.

Peter searched the chaos as another flash of lightning pieced the sky. “We have nothing to fear” he shouted, “The Master is with us!” The thunder was his response.

As lightning flashed again he looked, one by one, at the faces of the desperate men. Surely, He has not abandoned us, not now? Not in THIS storm? But of all the fear-filled faces he saw, none were his beloved Savior’s.

Finally, Peter retreated below. Resigned to their fate if the One he sought was not there.
Here he was, asleep. Peter shook Him and Jesus turned, looking into Peter’s eyes.

“Oh, ye of little faith.” He said, yet tenderly smiling, as he climbed the steep steps to the deck.

A hush fell among the men as Jesus spoke, “Peace, be still.” The sun immediately broke through the clouds. The wind and waves ceased.

There was no more effort. No more fear. The storm was over.

My storm’s still raging. And like Peter, I have resigned myself to the realization that if the Savior isn’t with me, I’m sunk.

So I climb down into the depths of my soul and I cry out “My Lord!” and every single time He answers me. “My child I am here!”

“Peace, be still.”

And in His presence there is no more effort. No more fear. The storm is over.
