" Come on Judy, lets's go, we have to catch the bus!" Her brother yelled as he went out the door.
"Alright, I am coming.Hold on!" Judy said ,picking up her lunch before going to high school. Judy saw her group in front of the school. They were talking about Cathy. She was a girl in their school who received good grades and was considered in the "out group".
" Did you see Cathy yesterday Judy? She had her hand up on every question. She is sure trying to be teachers pet."
" Yes, I know. She thinks she is smart, but I don't think so." Judy looked annoyed as she discussed Cathy.
Just then Cathy was walking by. They stoped talking and stared at her and then laughed.
The day went on as usual. But this was going to turn out to be a very unusual day.Judy noticed that a boy in her class seemed nervous but then dismissed the idea as he was probably thinking about the test today.
Then it happened! The boy took out a gun and started shooting! All the students ran. Everyone was gone except Judy and Cathy. Judy thought for sure she was going to die. She silently said a prayer to Jesus asking to please save her.
The boy looked like he was in a daze and looked straight at Judy with no emotion, just a blank empty stare and shot! Cathy jumped in front of Judy and yelled "No!".Judy heard the shot, but then noticed she wasn't hurt. Cathy had been hit.Judy yelled for help, but it was to late. Cathy was dying.
Judy asked her " Why did you save my life, especially after we did such mean things to you?"
Cathy answered slowly and as she was struggling to breath said ,"I know I am in the "out group", but we are all brothers and sisters of Jesus.I could not let him kill my sister." Then she died.
Judy cried uncontrolably. She had just witnessed the most anyone can do for another. Giving their life for a brother or sister.
This was a turning point for Judy. She started going to church and learned about Jesus and finding out how to live as Cathy did. Seeing everyone as a sister and brother. She realized there isn't any "in" or " out "group.
That we are beloved children of God.
