What w“onderful news! Did you hear?”
“No, what news?”
“They just said that he agreed to let us have a real king.”
“A king, you say?”
“Yes, finally, God has allowed. Thanks be to God.”
“Are you sure God has really spoken to Samuel and that this is really God’s will?”
“Samuel said that God really doesn’t want us to have one—that we should be happy with just God leading, guiding, and ruling us.”
“That had a ring to it that maybe God will be displeased with whoever is chosen—or maybe with us as His people because we ‘forced’ him to choose a king for us.”
“Oh, that can’t be right.”
“But that is what Samuel actually said. But all the other countries around us have kings. We are just a poor, not unified nation without one. We need the respect and notability of any other nation. “
“That maybe right, but usually God is more right about things than we are.”
“But he’s letting us get a king—so it can’t be all that wrong, either.”
“Guess we’ll wait and see what kind of king Samuel will anoint that God has chosen,” and the young, extremely handsome and tall young noble quickly ended the conversation. “I better go.”
The handsome young man suddenly panicked and doubts of his own self esteem overwhelmed him. He knew he was the chosen king-to-be because Samuel had already talked with him. He should have dropped to his knees in prayer and asked God to give him the strength to do this monstrous task of ruling these many divisive tribes of Israel. But he didn’t. He thought it was all by his own strength, and he cried to himself.
Suddenly, he just started running—where—he had no idea—just away—just away.
“I’ve got to just hide. Samuel has made a mistake. He has to be wrong. He got God’s choice all wrong. No way has God wanted me to be the King of all these tribes. They can’t even agree on land, money, and , especially, a main leader. That job would be unbelievably hard. No way do I want that job.” He ran blindly into a large stack of packed baggage. Then it hit him—the baggage, that’s the answer. “I’ll just hide right in the middle of all this stuff, and those men from Samuel will never find me.
And he quickly pried the barrel lid open and crawled inside using another barrel as a stepping stone. And there he waited for the hunt to end. He could hear the men searching for him.
One of the men who was searching exclaimed, “There…there’s the baggage. Samuel said God told him we would find our king to be hiding in the baggage. Hurry here and we find him.”
Too soon, Saul knew he simply had to come out of hiding. Finally, Saul capitulated and prayed, “Oh, God, there is no escape. Is there no where I can hide? Is there nothing that will change your mind about me? I cannot do this on my own.”
“Ah, my son, that is the point.” Whispered God in Saul’s very soul.
And Saul finally emerged with his head held high because God was holding it. God held Saul up and God still is calling and seeking for his own to do His will with God, not man, holding them up.
