“Hello?”
“Please wait for the next available representative.”
Now why on earth would I waste my time doing that? I hung up and poured myself a cup of coffee and opened the newspaper. The phone rang again.
“Hello?”
It was a real person this time. “May I please speak to Joe Schmoe?”
“You’ve got the wrong number,” I said with and irritable edge in my voice.
“This is the number in our system, so could you please give Mr. Schmoe a message for me?”
“I told you, you’ve got the wrong number. Now, could you please remove my phone number from your computer?”
”I’m sorry. We can’t do that without Joe Schmoe’s permission. But, if you want to get in contact with Mr. Schmoe and have him contact us to give us his correct phone number, then we’ll be happy to remove your number from our system.”
“You’ve got to be kidding!” I slammed the phone down.
From that day on, my telephone started to ring not stop. It seemed the original computer system contacted all of Joe Schmoe’s creditors and gave them my phone number. The situation snowballed out of control until I thought I’d lose my mind.
I finally called the phone company to have my number changed. I was heart broken, because I’d had the same phone number for over twenty years. That number was a part of who I was, and to think I had to give it up because of a computer glitch in the system.
It took some time to adjust, but I finally memorized my new phone number, contacted all my friends and relatives, and ordered new business cards. Life was starting to settle down. Then, one Saturday morning the telephone rang.
“Hello?”
“This message is for Joe Schmoe. If you are not Joe Schmoe, please hang up. If your are, please hold for an important message.”
I heaved a big sigh, then waited for the person to connect.
“Are you Joe Schmoe?” a woman asked, in a foreign accent.
“No, I’m not, but I have a very important message for you. Do you know that Jesus loves you?”
“What?”
“Jesus loves you, my friend.”
“I … I’m sorry, if you’re not Mr. Schmoe, I can’t talk to you,” the lady said.
“But I can talk to you, I replied. “Let me share with you how Jesus changed my life.”
“This call is being recorded,” she said anxiously.
“That’s good, then you can play this message to everyone to let them know that God loved the world so much, He sent His only Son, and whoever believes in Him will not perish, but have everlasting life. If you would like more information on how to receive Jesus Christ as your Savior, you may call me any time and I’ll be happy to share the love of Christ with you.”

Two days later, I received a phone call from the lady with the foreign accent.
“I’m sorry to bother you, but could you please tell me more about who this “Jesus” is?”
“I’d be happy to,” I said.
