A memory is such a treasure! You see a face and immediately you can put a name to it. You read a book and you can tell your friends the title and author with out a five minute groping period. On your way to the grocery you realize you forgot your list. No problem! You remember what was on that list and proceed to shop with confidence. Your car keys are not where they usually are, but you know exactly where you left them. The library books (whose titles and authors you remember) are always returned on time because you remember their due date. Birthdays of loved ones are never forgotten. Yes, memory is a gift that cannot be held in your hand but it is a treasure.
It is a blessing to have a memory – an experience that, when recalled, takes you to a special time and place. You recall the people, smells and colors that make the memory so special. Scents often bring a memory to mind. The kitchen can release a memory in a flash.
Today I was making pickles. The mingled smells of cucumbers, vinegar and spices triggered a vivid memory of my mother-in-law’s kitchen. The kitchen itself was very plain, but there was nothing plain about the food cooked there. Every summer we were treated with home made jams and jellies served on hot yeast rolls and biscuits. The vegetables cooked in her simple kitchen were grown right behind the house and seasoned to perfection.
The smell of sausage frying early in the morning still takes me back to when the kids were little and we’d come home for a visit. Miss Elizabeth would get up about five o’clock to make breakfast. The smell of coffee brewing, biscuits cooking and sausage frying was heavenly. I treasure that memory.
For years I have kept journals. My children and grand children will have my memories. I wish Miss Elizabeth had kept a journal. Then they would have her memories. She doesn’t have a single one, but at eighty-eight she still has the sweetest smile and the kindest touch that always brings a memory of love and belonging. What a treasure!
