They weren’t raising a family. It was more like a dynasty. Six boys, seven girls.
Life was tough in those days. Papa worked as a fisherman, selling fish to the public when he caught them. Mama kept house. Keeping house meant raising children, cooking meals, cleaning, gardening, canning, sewing and taking care of any and all emergencies that might arise in a day’s time.
Papa was well known about town. He was a friendly fellow, a bit rounder in the waist than some, and his temper fit his ruddy complexion and reddish hair. He was a hard worker, picking up work on the road crews with the county when fishing wasn’t good. Feeding and clothing thirteen children kept him mindful of every penny. He didn’t mind the hard work. Providing for his family was what he wanted to do. The children were his pride and joy.
As the kids began to grow, he would tell them, “There ain’t no such word as cain’t!” He wanted them to know that they could accomplish anything in their lives. He would support them in their efforts to make a life for themselves.
“Git your education!” he would admonish them, knowing that with a good education they could go far.
Most of all, though, I remember his advice to each of them as they would leave home. “Remember who you are!” he would tell them. “Remember who you are!” They knew what he meant. They could never forget who they were or where they came from. Their family name was important and they were expected to live up to it by leading lives of honesty and integrity.
He left a legacy of honor, pride and hard work. Not one of his thirteen children failed to live up to that legacy.
As my Papa grew older, his pride in his children never wavered. Their love and respect for him never faltered. They honored him in their lives.
The Lord might agree with this hard working man, my Papa. “There ain’t no such word as cain’t!” All things are possible for them that believe. “Git your education!” Read and study the Word of God and apply it in your life. “Remember who you are!” Never forget that you are a child of the King and are expected to live a life worthy of that relationship. Honor Him in your life.
