“Hey,” they replied in unison.
“You won’t believe what happened to me last night. I told you I started going to this youth group a couple weeks ago, remember? Do you see anything different about me? Do I look different, sound any different?” Danny fired off at them.
“Whatdaya mean? Uh...you ARE acting a little strange,” Bill answered.
“What’s up?” Chris asked.
“Well, ya see, I got changed last night. I mean, really BIG TIME changed. I mean,” he stammered, “I gave my heart to Jesus last night and, like...I’m a new person!”
“Oh no! I don’t believe what I’m hearing. I knew when you said you were going to a religious youth group that this wouldn’t end good. You aren’t going off the DEEP END, are you?” Bill sounded really concerned.
Grabbing Bill by the shoulders, “You know, you guys...you need to get right with God. Today! Tomorrow may be too late. What if something happens, like an accident, and you die? Are you ready for that...to meet your Maker, maybe go to hell? No, you WILL go to hell if you don’t know God’s Son, Jesus.”
“Hands off, Bud. Just keep your hands off. I hope you wake up, and real soon, or we won’t be seein’ much of each other. Don’t give me any of that Jesus talk. Are you goin’ with us tomorrow night or not,” Bill shot back.
They moved off a little, expressions intent on his response.
“Well...I...I really don’t want to go out like that any more. I shouldn’t be drinking, and neither should you, either of you, if you know what’s good for you. But we can still be friends, can’t we? Come on guys. Let me explain what happened.”
Before Danny could go further, “Save it Bud, save it for someone else. Guess we’ll be seein’ ya ‘round.” Bill put his arm over Chuck’s shoulder as they walked away.
Ears ringing from his friends’ rebuff, Danny heard their laughter and saw backward glances as he watched them fade around a corner. They had all grown up together and knew each other’s hopes, dreams, desires and fears. He had been so excited to share Jesus with them and could not understand this sting of rejection.
Pondering his dilemma, Danny sat alone on a nearby bench. Opening his backpack, he took out his Bible and a booklet from youth group. He winced reading the booklet title, “How to Share Christ with Your Friends.” A quick survey of topics convinced Danny that he had come on too strong when they weren’t ready to hear. If only I can have another chance. I need to apologize. I’m going to pray about it, a lot.
