Meanwhile Jake was on the phone to Dave “She is not here yet, what if she does not turn up.” “Will you relax, you are early what do you expect! Besides when did you start sweating over a girl usually it’s the other way round. You have changed.” Jake silently acknowledged that since having a personal relationship with God, his attitude towards girls have changed dramatically, he respected them as individuals and has stopped thinking of himself as God’s gift to the female sex. Dave continued irking his childhood friend “Tell me, what’s going on, you insist you are just friends but you are meeting to talk on Valentine’s Day!” Jake runs his now sweaty palm through his hair “I like her, really like her.” “So what’s the problem?” Dave chuckled he couldn’t believe Jake was getting so nervous about this girl, he wondered to himself what she looked like. “Look, Dave I know this is hard for you to understand knowing my record, but this girl is not like any other girl besides she is also my friend and I do not want to scare her off.” Dave suddenly realised the depth of his emotions in his voice for this person and concluded this was not the old Jake talking.” “Just be honest with her, man.” “Oh here she comes, got to go.” “Come clean!” Dave said quickly before the click of the phone.
Jake had the luxury of observing her silhouette as she walks closer and quickly thinks about what captures him about Vera. She was pretty but it wasn’t just her looks, she was tough yet there was vulnerability about her that he yearned to protect. Sincere but sometimes secretive, he was intrigued. Lord I am going to trust you with this we discussed. “Hi” he whispered softly “How are you.” Vera responded “Shall we walk?” She nodded, they walked in silence for a while then Vera stopped and faced him “What did you want to talk to me about?” Jake was dismayed, he couldn’t get any words out he simply looked at her, took her hand gently and kept walking. Vera analytical mind was racing, what is he playing at, I don’t need emotional games and I am definitely not going to get hurt again!
Jake finally stopped walking and said “Vera I don’t know how to say this, will you be my Valentine?” It was Vera’s turn to be dismayed by her reaction tears flowed from her eyes and all she could do was respond with a tight hug.
