When I was young I lived on a farm. We raised chickens, beef and pigs. Every summer we would have a neighborhood barbeque. My Dad would dig a huge hole in the ground and hang a large pig on a spit and cook it for hours. As it cooked everyone would visit and play a multitude of games. It was usually a lot of fun and the food was always memorable.

The year I was fourteen I invited several of my school friends to the barbeque. They all lived in town and I thought a trip to the country would be a treat for them.

My friend, Elaine seemed to be interested in the meat that was cooking and kept going over to watch it go around the spit. “What are you cooking?” she asked my Dad.
“Well, I’m cooking a pig,” he answered..
“No, not a pig”, she muttered, “not a pig.” She walked away from my Dad shaking her head.
Later my Dad ask me if Elaine had ever seen a pig before. He said she acted really strange when he told her what it was. “I don’t know”, I said, “maybe she just never saw a whole one cooking at once.”

It was not until I was an adult that I realized what it was that bothered my friend, Elaine. She was Jewish. She thought eating a pig was eating an unclean thing. As a teenager I was too naive to know or understand what I had done to Elaine by inviting her to a barbeque with a large pig being served to everyone. In my ignorance I did not realize that any food would be considered forbidden. Even though several years have passed and I haven’t seen Elaine for most of them, I am still embarrassed for my ignorance.

For her part, Elaine never mentioned to me what I had done. She continued to be my friend as long as we went to school together. To this day, I always think of Elaine and the grace she extended to me in my ignorance.
