“I have no place else to go. I have to come home with you,” Kay stated.
But her mother had a bombshell of her own to drop.
“I sold my house and bought one near Granny,” Kay’s mom stated. “I’m back to start packing for my move.”
A house two states away. Mom was going back to her mother. They just stared at each other for several minutes. Kay panicked again. Was her mom running out on her too? First her dad, then her husband, now her mom. Dear God, what next!
Neither woman liked the situation facing them, but both knew there was only one solution. Kay and company had to move two states away with her mother.
Robotically moving through the next few weeks, Kay finally got the packing done, a truck secured, the kids and her mother cared for. When they finally reached their new home, she felt the first peace in many months. It was good to be among mother’s large and loving family. Her aunts and grandmother were her salvation. She began to feel blessed again. The numbness of the last few years with an abusive husband and constant fear began to fade into the background as she replaced that numbness with God’s presence.
Kay’s ex-husband disappeared so he wouldn’t have to pay child-support. She had absolutely nothing but her children and the clothes on her back, and God’s grace. She clung to that grace until her self-confidence grew enough to start planning her life. She’d always wanted to be a nurse and asked God to bless this endeavor. What happened next could only be of divine origin!
First of all, the move to a new state provided Kay and her children with assistance she had never known about, including health and education benefits. Secondly, Kay met a friend at church who went out of her way to get Kay into the third best nursing school in the nation at that time. The school had many first that year: first open admissions, first time to allow students to live off campus, and first to offer no interest, unsecured loans to students that would be repaid after graduation! God’s timing is magnificent.
Kay’s uncle needed someone to live in a rent house of his so it wouldn’t be vacant. Kay and the kids had a great place to live.
After establishing her academic skills, Kay was given a full grant for all but the first semester of school. She had practically nothing to repay after graduation.
Because she was a single mom trying to improve her lot in life, Kay’s children received free childcare at a church care center.
Kay’s aunt worked in the loan office at a local bank. She was able to find a repossessed car that Kay could afford.
Kay’s son required surgery for a birth defect. He was enrolled in a hospital research program and received all his care at no cost.
There’s more but you get the picture. When God restores a girl’s confidence, He goes all out.
Forty years after the events related in this story Kay knows she is blessed. She realizes God was her protector back then and even surer that He is today. God is the only source of confidence. Even if Kay didn’t always get what she asked for, she always got what was best according to God’s plan. He is still blessing her today. She is retired, has five grown children, ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Oh! God gave her a loving husband, a childhood sweetheart out of her past, because she asked Him to relieve her loneliness.
