“Time to rise and shine,” Dylan said to his fluffy, orange cat. Foxy yawned and stretched and lifted his sleepy head from the pillow.
Dylan and Foxy shared more than a pillow. Every night, they shared a dream. Last night, their dream took them on a treasure hunt. Dylan found a box loaded with treasure. Foxy pawed through gold and silver coins. They picked out colorful jewels for Foxy’s collar. The sun woke them up just as the pirates came to steal the treasure.
“Remember those shiny sparkles, Foxy? Those were gen-u-ine diamonds,” said Dylan.
Dylan jumped up. He began to get dressed. “If we hurry, we can go on a real treasure hunt before breakfast.”
Dylan and Foxy tiptoed down the hall to the front door, quiet as a pair of mice in house shoes. As he turned the door knob, his mother called from the kitchen, “Don’t be gone long, Dylan. Breakfast is almost ready.”
Dylan shrugged at Foxy. He should have known that his mother, the early bird, would be awake before him.
Dylan and Foxy walked outside. Tall mountains covered with green trees stood watch over their neighborhood like guardian angels. The sky was the same color as his blue bicycle. The clouds looked like scoops of vanilla ice cream. Their friend, the sun, was shining like a handful of new pennies.
“Stop and smell the beauty, Foxy!” Dylan said. Foxy lifted his flat, black nose and sniffed the air. “Nice,” he mewed.
Dylan spied Mr. K next door. Mr. K was watching his dog fetch the morning paper.
“Good morning, Mr. K. Isn’t Tex a golden retriever?” Dylan asked. “Has he retrieved any gold?”
“Not even once,” Mr. K laughed. “Tex only retrieves footballs, newspapers and Mrs. K’s new shoes. But if you want to train him to retrieve gold, be my guest.”
Next, Dylan saw Mrs. E digging in her flower garden.
“Good morning, Mrs. E,” Dylan said politely. “Have you found a treasure chest buried in all that dirt?”
“I’m afraid not, Dylan. Just garden snakes and worms and doodle bugs. See for yourself,” said Mrs. E, holding up a wiggly worm.
Looking both ways, Dylan and Foxy crossed the street to watch Mr. R clean out his garage. Foxy ran in the garage to help clean out the mice.
“Mr. R, have you found any diamonds in your garage?” asked Dylan.
“Well, some people say that one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. But, no, I haven’t found any diamonds in all this junk,” replied Mr. R.
Just then, Dylan heard his mother call.
Dylan sat down at the kitchen table. His mother placed a bowl of oatmeal in front of him. She gave Foxy a bowl of milk.
“What have you boys been doing this morning?” asked Dad, giving Dylan a hug and Foxy a pat on the head.
“We’ve been treasure hunting,” said Dylan.
“This book is all about treasure,” said Dad, holding up his Bible. “Treasure that money can’t buy and pirates can’t steal.”
Dylan dropped his spoon. Foxy stopped lapping his milk. “For real?” Dylan asked.
“The Bible is full of real adventures,” said Dad.
After breakfast, Dylan took his Children’s Bible Story Book from his bookcase. Aunt Cindy had given him the book for his birthday. Sometimes, Dylan took the book to church.
“I never thought the Bible was an everyday book to read,” Dylan said. “Let’s find a good dream story for tonight.”
That night, Dylan and Foxy dreamed of a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee. The waves grew large and gray, like elephants shaking their floppy ears. They saw a man walking on the water in the storm.
“Come to me,” he said.
“Don’t be afraid,” Dylan told his cat. Tucking Foxy under his arm, Dylan stepped on the water. Dylan kept his eyes on Jesus as he walked bravely to him.
Dylan and Foxy smiled in their sleep. This was the first of many Bible adventure dreams. Tomorrow night, they planned to get shipwrecked with a man named Paul.
