Her command rumbled out like a boulder and rolled me flat. That same insistent motherly voice that snatches you up and makes you obey no matter how old you are. "You will come out here and get married in a church with your family." I looked at my man. The man I was already calling hubby and decided that I did desire for our union to be shared with all the people I love and blessed in a church.
I agreed, but I insisted to be married over my spring break. I didn't want to wait until the summer because I couldn't picture myself waddling down the aisle, looking like Winona Ryder sneaking out with thousand dollars of merchandise stuffed in her shirt from Sax. I also didn't want to wait until after the baby was born because I already gave birth to one child out of wedlock by a former love, I wasn't about to do it again. That gave us one week to throw together a small wedding.
This was the perfect ingredients to cook up marriage disaster stew. At the last minute, I called my church back home and thankfully, the pastor agreed. My friends were another story. It took a river full of crocodile tears to convince people to get it together in time and find something nice to wear. My husband's family were the worst because they all wanted to come but didn't want to miss work. I planned on getting married March 16th, a Friday, but everyone was pushing me to change to March 17th, St. Patrick's Day. Being that I am African-American, the last thing I wanted to do was seal my union on a day set aside for the Irish.
However, I didn't get my way because my fiancée threw a fit. Not only that, but one of my best friends couldn't come. My finacee's groomsmen's car broke down on the expressway making my groom late because he had to go pick them up. My hair was thrown together at the last minute and it ended up looking like a peacock laid her eggs in my head. The car I was in ran out of gas making me an hour and a half late to my own wedding. My flower girl had a temper tantrum as she's walking down the aisle. My brother-in-law's fiancée screamed at me because since he was the best man he walked down the aisle with my maid of honor and she didn't want him walking down any aisle of a church with any woman but her.
But the thing that seemed like a pain to me at the time was the fact that the Pastor insisted on giving us our pre-counseling speech before the marriage. Even if it meant that Xavier had to see me in my wedding gown. But as we sat there, with Xavier eyes clamped shut facing the pastor, me fidgeting and hoping my guests aren’t sneaking out the back door he looked at us strongly and said, “Victoria, Xavier a union is important because God sees you both as one.” I remember thinking that with divorce flying around in most people’s eyes we are more like two’s and three’s. “Hold on to Christ’s forgiveness and start fresh loving, understanding and forgive each other the way He has forgiven you.” We both were Christians but we both knew we had to start new and pray and reach for Christ’s forgiveness and not turn back.
After all the chaos, when I finally kissed Xavier, a realization nailed itself to my head. I am a married woman; I've found someone who desires to be with me for the rest of his life and we were right in the sight of God. I bubbled over with happiness and it came out of me in tears. Everything that happened no longer mattered and I couldn't wait to go back to small apartment with my man my son and my child-to be.
