So Peter, the once adamant confident disciple has gone fishing to get away from the pain and shame of denying Christ. But can he get away from the inner voice? Below is a deep-water tackling between the new man and the old man…or fisherman.
Where you’re running to, dude?
To the boat where you’re called from?
Back to the walls of familiarity
Where you feed on your self-pity?
O be quiet,
Don’t you self-righteous me
Not one, but thrice
I disown the Christ.
Dude, you should have seen it coming
The Lord foreshadows
Your mouth gets in the way
“Never, “ you say?
Love was burning tall
Emotions fluttered with youth and boldness
Big as blimps, flaunting, flying…
Only to burst on lying.
So this fishing thing
Will undo the pain within?
The net, the bait, the trawler still
Will double as your depression pill?
Oh, go catch a fish yourself
I need no prude
Oiling my sore
Bringing my pride to the fore.
Not just pride, dude
Have you cast your all
In His Tiberias of cleansing
So Christ will be your eternal blessing?
Don’t try to reel me in,
Christ has given up on one
As lily-livered and treacherous as I
How could I be so blind?
Dude, five fisherman and no fish?
Perhaps you need the Fisher of men
Hear, He beckons from the shore
To go forth and find sheep galore.
