My friend, Gladys, and I had been fishing for quite awhile. We got bored with sitting there and nothing happening so we propped the ends of our poles in the bank. We were out exploring around the edge of the lake when we spotted the pole. We quickly went back to where we had stuck the ends of our poles. Gladys’ pole was exactly where she had left it.
She said, “I think I can catch your line with my pole.”
Gladys cast her line out several times before she finally snagged the line and brought it in. Sure enough, there was a big fish on the end of the line. We got the fish off the line and put it in our bucket.
Gladys and I didn’t get to go fishing very often. We both were farm girls and had chores. This was an unusual day where we were caught up. My mother suggested we try our hands at fishing since it was a beautiful day.
We sat back down on the bank and cast our lines into the lake again. After we sat there for quite awhile, we again decided to wander around the lake. Lo, and behold, it happened again. There was my pole floating around in the lake.
Gladys’ pole was still secure where we left it. She again got her pole and cast her line out into the lake. Again, she was successful to bring mine in with another big fish on the end.
These fish were the biggest fish anyone had ever caught in this lake. Caught is probably not the right word. Nevertheless, we had fish for supper and Gladys came to share it with us.
My fishing adventure reminds me of another one that is recorded in Luke 5:4-6, (NIV) “When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, ‘Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.’ Simon answered, ‘Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.’ When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.”
Like me, Simon hadn’t caught anything. Also, like me someone else gave him success.
