Exhausted didn’t seem to cover it. We’d spent all day on foot. After the third stop, we tried to convince Jesus to quit for the day, but we knew better. The people had real needs and he alone knew how to fill them. By the time the sun began to eek its way down the western sky, we all needed a break.
Being fishermen by trade the idea of a nice relaxing cruise on the water sounded fantastic. Jesus agreed. “Let’s go over to the other side,” he said.
In a matter of minutes, we had what we needed for our trip and we hopped in the boat and headed out. Before we dipped our oars in the water, Jesus was sound asleep at the stern.
It didn’t matter that it was just an ordinary sunset or that the bread we’d been carrying since noon was getting stale. We were alone at last and the silence was magnificent.
I guess we were relishing the moment a little too much because the storm emerged from nowhere. One moment the gulls were cawing in the distance and the next we were pummeled by torrents of rain. Unfortunately it wasn’t just rain. Our boat began to bounce around like a crumb on a shaken cloth. Any moment and we would be a lost crumb to the earth. A curtain of lightening encircled our nest of boats.
Someone yelled out, “where’s Jesus?”
He wasn’t visibly on deck, and it’s possible he might have been tossed over. I went to go find him in the last place I’d seen him. The idea that he’d be sleeping through this storm hadn’t crossed any of our minds and when I found him there snoring, it infuriated me.
“GET UP!” I raged! “Why aren’t you doing anything? All day you’re helping strangers, and now when the people who love you are in danger, you sleep?”
Obviously irritated, he roused and sat up. He didn’t say anything to me, and I fully expected him to rebuke me right there, but his eyes showed compassion. Actually, it was the same way my mother used to look at me when I was a child.
Jesus walked onto the deck with hand-sheltered brow. He scanned the horizon and then looked around at us.
“I don’t know why you’re so scared, where is your faith?” Jesus said. He turned, closed his eyes for a moment, then faced the storm and in a stern voice he spoke to the storm, “Silence. Be still.”
In an instant the lightening receded, the rain evaporated, the waves unfurled and the sea was like glass. The tension around us melted away with the storm.
Jesus smoothed this hair back, wringing out the water. He surveyed the boat and this bedraggled gang of disciples around him.
“Now,” he sighed, “if you don’t mind, I’m going to finish my nap.”
