She sat there for a long time looking at the blank piece of paper attached to the art easel. The assignment was simple enough, at least for the rest of the class of sixth graders who knew that their pictures were going to be hung on the walls for their parents to see that night. It was the beginning of the semester and tonight was back to school night for the parents to meet the teacher.

The brightly colored portraits were supposed to depict what was the best part of each student’s summer vacation. They had so many colors to choose from and many ways to express their ideas, from crayons to vibrant water colors.

The teacher made her way around the room; looking on as the young artists expressed each of their various summer vacations as shown through each child’s eyes and expressed through their hands. In one picture a boy drew all his friends around him to show that his summer vacation was spent at the park playing softball with his best friends.

Another showed a family camping trip right next to a rushing river; there was the twin girls that displayed what each enjoyed best on their cruise to Alaska with their grandparents. Yet another picture showed how much fun one young fellow had scaring his sister and her friends during a sleep over.

Finally the teacher made her way toward the back of the classroom where a quiet student was working away. She stared at the picture, a bit perplexed, but with sadness. The silhouette was sketched in one dark charcoal color; there was no one else in the picture other than this girls face. There was no background sign of any friends, parents, siblings, pets or vacation scenes anywhere in this drawing.

As the teacher walked closer, she could see that the hair was unkempt, as if it were possibly blown around by the wind; there was also no mouth or nose. There were just two saddened eyes looking back at her that told her the whole story of this students summer vacation; it was summed up with the shades of tears falling from those disheartened eyes; just the way they were falling now when her teacher turned to look at her.
