Topic: Desire (01/17/05)
My two-year-old son, Jared, and I were tooling through town in our Rendezvous like Tiger Woods yesterday. On a serious note, we were on our way to a doctor’s appointment when Jared taught me an important lesson. We were tuned in to American Family Radio, listening to Money Matters. A lady called in to the program to ask for money advice where it related to marriage. The caller had allowed a small financial problem to come between her and her husband. The hosts of the program prayed with her. Jared was snug in his car seat in the middle of the vehicle, when he piped up, “We need to pray for Pokey.” I had not realized that Jared was listening to the radio or that he knew the hosts were praying. Smokey is our pet puppy, a one-year-old Australian Shepherd who has an injured paw. We prayed for Pokey and for my husband who was at a doctor’s visit of his own that day, having tubes put into his ears while we prayed.

It touched my heart that Jared, at age two, knows Who to call upon when he has a need. The puppies injured paw was important to Jared and to His Father. It is of utmost importance to me to instill the love of the Lord in all three of my children. I know that if I train them up in the way they should go, then they will not depart from it (Prov. 22:6).

Jared also reminded me that I need to walk in a manner, worthy of the Lord (Col. 1:10). I understand that no one is righteous except the Lord, but I can allow His love, peace, mercy and other characteristics to flow through me. I can yield to Him in situations, rather than following my way.

My prayer for my three children is that they would desire truth in their inner parts, and wisdom in their inmost places (Psalm 1:6). I pray that they will be blessed with a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him (Eph.1:17). I pray that the eyes of Jared, Jordan and Katie’s hearts will be enlightened that they will know the hope to which He has called them (Eph. 1:18). Finally, I pray that my children whom He has entrusted to me and my husband, would desire to live honorably in every way (Heb. 13:18).

Doesn't it do your heart good to hear your children anxious to pray!? I think you want for your own the same things that all parents who know Christ want for their children. Or at least I want the same things. And as Jared himself would probably tell you, that's why we need to be praying one for another. Glad I had the chance to read your adorable story.
