Advent is, in a way, a season celebrating parents. It certainly is for me. Advent and parent will be forever linked for me because the coming birth of our son was announced during the lighting of the Advent Candle.
I was forty-five and my wife was… less than forty-five, when she announced to me that she was pregnant. I did a Sarah when she told me, I laughed.
I had been praying for an exercise program. I was thinking a membership to the gym but God wanted me run so he gave us a son and I have been running ever since.
We wanted our church family to celebrate our joy with us so we decided December would be a good time to share the news. And it came to pass in those days that I was lighting the Advent candle representing John the Baptist.
I told how an angel announced to Zechariah that he would have a son in his old age and how Zechariah didn’t believe that such a thing could happen. What a great segue to my little secret—“ “I know exactly how Zechariah felt because I am going to have a child in my old age…”
There was a moment of silence as the words sank in, then the heavens let loose and we celebrated.
I cannot celebrate Advent without celebrating Parents.
