“Daddy, why are the clouds so puffy?”
“That’s just the way God made them today, Billy.”
“Why is the sun so shiny and bright?”
“God made the sun bright and shiny to keep us warm, to give the flowers and plants light to grow and to give us light to see.”
“Daddy, when the sun goes to bed at night, we can’t see. Can God see in the dark?”
“Yes, Billy, God can see in the dark. He is always with us, whether it is dark or light.”
The conversation lulled as they continued to drive past trees, flowering plants and bushes, horses, cows, and bunnies. Then on a hill on one of the farms, there were three crosses.
“Daddy, what are those pieces of wood over there that look like a T?”
The father pulled the car over to the side of the road so he could talk face to face with his boy. They both got out of the car and walked to a big old shade tree.
“Billy, come here and sit next to me. Those pieces of wood that look like the letter T are called crosses. Do you remember the stories Mommy and I have told you about Jesus?”
“Uh-huh”.
“Good. Way back when Jesus was here walking on the earth some men nailed Jesus to a cross just like those out there on that hill.”
“They nailed him Daddy? Didn’t that hurt?”
“Yes, it sure did hurt.”
“Why did they do it? Why didn’t his Daddy stop them?”
“Well, Billy, Jesus is a special man. He is the Son of God. God sent His Son Jesus to die for all the bad things we do.”
“He did?”
“Yes, He did. The cross in the middle is the one that Jesus was put on. The one on either side was where two criminals were hung.”
“But, Jesus wasn’t a criminal. He is God’s Son.”
“I know. God sent Jesus to die for us on that cross. If God, Jesus’ Daddy, had gotten Him off that cross, we wouldn’t be able to be with Jesus in heaven some day.”
“But why are the crosses on that hill now Daddy?”
“They are there to remind us of the price Jesus paid for us. He died on a cross just like that, so that we could live forever with Him.”
“Daddy, do you think all the people know about those T’s, I mean those crosses?”
“I don’t think so son, its part of our job here to tell everyone what they mean.”
“Daddy, I am gonna to tell my friends about them T’s. I am gonna tell them about Jesus.”
“That makes your Daddy very happy Billy. Very happy.”
As we look at the crosses the line some of our highways, let us be mindful that at the foot of the cross, the ground is level.
