It had been a hard day, already. Now, there wasn't time to take a break, but, he did. He knew the rest of the day was harder, yet. More strenuous work ahead.
"Britt?"
"Yes, dear?"
"Come in for dinner. It's almost ready. "
"I'm coming. Thank you, Anna. "
They lived simply. They worked hard and enjoyed all of life. They were just starting out in their new married life. Things meant something, these days. They knew they had a future. God had brought them together in a meaningful way. Now, He was keeping them together through their struggles and their triumphs and the desire they had to learn about each other and how to love each other more deeply.
In this day and age, no one thought that they already knew how to love. It was something they had to work at, something they had to learn together.
It wasn't just an act. It wasn't just a moment to love.
It was a life of learning how to love and that's what they had to build. Together. Hand in hand with the Lord.
"What's in store, today?"
"I'll be plowing all day," Britt answered as he sat down to the fine food that Anna had lovingly prepared for him. They took hands. "Lord, thank you for a sunny day that will allow us to get the field work done. Thank you for our new lives together and the reason to complete the tasks that You've given us to do. Thank you for all You give to sustain us. Please be blessed by our tasks as You have blessed us by what You have completed for us. It's Your work that's done, Lord. Show us how to take it from here with the gift of Your Holy Spirit. In the precious name of Jesus, Amen!"
There was a future for them.
Brad and Amy sat across from each other. Their take-out bags were unopened.
It was a new life together. Not quite what either was bargaining for. It was easy to see disappointment.
They'd each had three new jobs in the past eight months. Quit each one because they didn’t feel they were fulfilling jobs. They thought they could save some money by living together.
"Let's eat. I'm starving. "
They both tore open the bags. Lunch was over in 20 minutes.
"Maybe we aren't ready for this kind of life together?"
"The love doesn't seem to be enough. The moment isn't working for me. "
"Me either. Can we spend some time looking for our own places?"
"Yeah, I don't want to be together, anymore, either."
We don't need the tag-on of who said what between Brad and Amy. There is no male or female voice in their conversation, just a mutual dislike of life together.
There is, no more, a privilege in being together. No mutual pleasure in becoming what God intended in relationships.
There is nothing in the act of love. Nothing in the moment, because there has been nothing in the building together.
Work and love are not a formula, but, a formation. They are not the foundation, but, work and love build upon a foundation that has already been laid and, upon this foundation, they form something creative and special.
"Britt, I'm going to try to have something special for supper! Maybe I'll try my hand at a pumpkin pie!"
"Thank you! You've just made my work seem so much lighter, today, knowing that you're waiting for me."
"Uh, what time should we meet for dinner, tonight?"
"I'm sorry, I just don't think I'll have time to get together. I have so much work to catch up on and, then, there's school. . . "
Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it. 1.
