I found out quickly that I did not know everything about my spouse. Although the dating process involves getting to know the one you love, it is impossible to know some things until you are living together under the same roof. This is where love comes in. You have to be willing to love your spouse unconditionally even if you discover that they have an annoying habit. When I sleep, I like to the pull the covers up to my head so that I can be warm. Unfortunately, this generally means that I am taking covers away from my wife. Although she is not always pleased about this situation, she tells me that she loves me and then lovingly yanks the covers back to her side of the bed!
Love must also take advantage of opportunities. Many times in a marriage, opportunities arise where it is possible for one spouse to show love to the other spouse. Opportunities such as birthdays and anniversaries are a given and must not be forgotten. But other, special gifts or plans must occur as well. For example, my wife got me something special on Sweetest Day. I was unaware that the day even existed, but she took the opportunity to show her love. Sometimes I just stop in to see her at work.. It might not seem like much, but taking that opportunity to show my love is worth it when I see the smile on her face.
A couple may find it difficult to have the right values when they first get married. It is not easy to go from living alone to living with another person. In college, my life basically involved studying, eating, sleeping, and playing a lot of computer games. But when I got married, I had to value my wife and my marriage above everything else. She had to come first. Though it was not an easy change, my wife helped me be allowing me to play computer games and do other things that I enjoyed as long as I spent valuable time with her too.
I have learned that using my ears is the one of the most important ways to show love to my wife. She doesn’t always have the best day at work and I need to listen when she tells me about it. She wants my sympathy and love, but I am unable to show it to her if I have not paid attention to what she said. It’s easy to just act like I am listening, but that is unfair to her. I know that I want her to listen to me and show interest in my stories. She deserves the same from me.
